Counsellor
Thank you for reading my profile.
I am a Counsellor/ Psychotherapist at the Family Psychology Practice in Manly Vale. In terms of formal education, I have a Postgraduate degree in counselling and extra training in complex trauma. I am a Clinical member of PACFA (Psychotherapists and Counsellors Federation of Australia).

The impact of traumatic experiences on our lives is unique to each of us. What I offer you is a safe space where you will be heard, respected and helped to feel at ease. To ensure your emotional safety, we will initially get to know each other and take time to learn skills that give you independence in calming anxiety/stress. My key aim is to support you to live a life that matches up with what is important to you. Our sessions will include a mixture of conversation and skill building to empower you to grow and heal.

I have extensive experience in helping my clients manage and recover from addictions (especially gambling disorder), anxiety and depression. Other specific client presentations I work with include domestic violence, family and relationship conflicts, and parenting challenges.

I think you will find that I have a warm approach and, at times, I bring in humour! I have a tool bag of methods I draw on that include ACT: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy; Mindfulness; Cognitive Behavourial Therapy and Transactional Analysis. We can also try some yoga/movement and art if that is of interest to you.

Ms Danielle Elisha

Social Worker
Danielle Elisha

I have 20 years experience in mental health. My positions managing beyondblue and SANE Australia's counselling services required me to develop, train and oversee their counselling services, which have grown to become among the most utilised national counselling services.

During my time with these organisations I began to witness the huge impact of childhood trauma on mental health. For the last 10 years I have worked in private practice in medical centres in Elwood, St Kilda and North Caulfield and a family counselling centre in North Caulfield where I have specialised in trauma related counselling. I work with clients around issues such as family violence, abuse, trauma, PTSD, grief and loss, suicide and self-harm and substance abuse and have written resources and undertaken research on many of these topics.

My extensive experience has led me to recognise that attending counselling can be challenging for everyone in particular for clients who have experienced a childhood trauma. I maintain a 'trauma informed' service, that is a service that is sensitive, aware and responsive to issues relating to trauma by:

- Providing a safe space. When a person experiences trauma at such a vulnerable age they can easily become attuned to issues of emotional and physical safety. I encourage clients to make choices that empower them, such as where they sit, light levels and room temperature as well as where sessions are conducted e.g. conducting sessions over the telephone, where appropriate.
- Providing key information upfront in order to manage expectations such as opening hours, cost structure and services provided
- Ensuring that my practice setting is quiet and homely with rooms, reception staff and waiting areas that reflect this.
- Using a consultative approach on a range of issues such as the frequency and times of appointments, goals, boundaries and how critical incidents are managed.
- Recognising that recovering from trauma can differ in terms of how it is best achieved and how long it takes and tailoring the way I work with each client based on these individual needs.
- Referring where appropriate. Having worked extensively in this area I also have developed a broad awareness of medical, legal and community services and supports that I can assist clients to access so that they can holistically recover.
- Keeping up to date. While I have had many years of experience I believe it is important to keep up on the latest research findings in the area. I do this by completing training modules, reading research paper and journal articles and attending supervision, peer consultation, and conferences.

Ms Danielle McPherson

Psychologist
I am a registered psychologist with experience providing a range of trauma-related and trauma-specific treatments in clinical and forensic contexts. I also have experience providing trauma informed support to individuals working within Victoria Police and the Australian Defence Force.

I have several years of experience working with individuals experiencing significant impacts of trauma in both forensic and clinical settings. The impact can be persistent and pervade all aspects of life. I have completed specialised training (including Schema Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing) and am committed to participation in regular professional development to maintain my competencies in the delivery of trauma-informed approaches.

I understand that the decision to engage with a psychologist to support the healing process can be difficult and may bring about internal conflict. I am mindful that individuals will commence their journey at various stages of readiness to talk about their experiences. For this reason, I aim to create a safe, respectful environment where individuals feel supported to proceed at a pace comfortable for them. During the initial session, we will work together to identify goals for therapy and develop a tailored plan to address these. To manage distressing thoughts or feelings that may arise during or between sessions, we will collaborate to develop a suite of strategies that may include calming, grounding and mindfulness techniques.

Sessions are approximately one-hour duration. I work in a warm, friendly clinic with a team of experienced psychologists and counsellors.
If you have any questions you would like answered before making an initial appointment, please feel free to contact me via the clinic by email: [email protected] or by phone: 03 9434 4161.

Ms Anne Ligthart

Counsellor
I am a Clinical Psychotherapist and Counsellor with 12 years of combined formal training.
I began in the ’80’s as a Reg Psych nurse, then switched careers in the ’90’s to Professional Scuba diver, and sailor (as life predicted..I was living in South East Asia) I became a mother in the mid ’90’s and began a business in remedial massage and associated bodywork and as my children became older (teens) I began training in Psychotherapy. Upon graduation as an Holistic Psychotherapist, I set up a full time practice and now have a busy home office and a part-time position at a tertiary college. I also work for VOCAT with victims of crime. My interest is in trauma informed therapy and I am attending regular PD in this regard. I am an Accredited EMDR Practitioner, and Level 2 Brainspotting Practitioner. As the field and research into neuropsychology expands, I continue to learn the absolute power of our own inner resources.

Today, I consult with and support those suffering from trauma and also work with family dynamics.

My particular interest/s are in Anthroposophical medicine and how to apply this to traumatised individuals and most particularly children, youth and families.
For more information on Anthroposophical medicine, please see this link - https://medsektion-goetheanum.org/en/anthroposophic-medicine/
I have completed a five year postgraduate training in Anthroposophical medicine as a psychotherapist and served two years as the Chair on the Board of the Anthroposophical Medical Association of Australia in 2018/19.

One of my most enduring concerns presently is the emphasis being placed on diagnosing over effective treatment; on managing over true healing and health. My practice takes this concern into account and I expand on my treatment approaches encompassing the whole human being. This can mean that therapy will usually provide artistic impulses and make room for spontaneity as well as approaches not based on evidence as the gold standard, but placing complete trust in the hands of the relationship, skills and experience, the process and the intentions behind the participants.

At the same time, I choose to use therapeutic models which are oriented in bodily sensations and experiences. My belief and now knowledge is that the human being is by definition already equipped to heal.

My role is to support that to occur.
