Mr Donovan Pill

Social Worker
I am qualified as an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker with over 20 years’ experience of delivering counselling services. I have worked as a counsellor in a number of Community Health and Youth Services before moving into Sexual Assault Support Services where I have been working for the past 10 years. Much of my work over the years has been in providing therapeutic support to victim/survivors of sexual abuse, childhood abuse, institutional abuse and family violence.

Central to my practice is a belief that all people possess the wisdom and internal resources they require to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives but that internal and external factors such as violence, abuse, stress, grief, mental health issues and adverse life events can at times make this difficult. I believe that psychotherapeutic counselling can offer significant assistance in managing these challenges but that this is most effective when appropriate time and care is taken to understand each person more fully and what holds most meaning in their lives.

My practice is trauma-informed and I am experienced in utilising a range of psychological interventions such as Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Mindfulness techniques, Solution Focussed Therapy to name a few.

In addition to counselling work, I have also worked alongside a range of community groups in violence prevention work and have facilitated multiple education and training sessions on working with survivors of sexual violence at universities, conferences, and workplaces in the health and social services sector.

I am thoughtful in my approach and welcome opportunities to work with people from a diverse range of experiences, gender expressions, sexualities and cultural backgrounds.

Ms Andrea Haas

Psychologist
I am a registered psychologist with over 20 years experience in the field. I have worked in private practice in Chatswood since 1999. In addition to my psychology training, I have completed a Diploma in Sexual Health Counselling and a comprehensive one-year training course in Ellyn Bader’s Developmental Model of Couples Therapy. I am an accredited sexuality therapist and I am skilled in dealing with the psychological repercussions associated with sexual and physical traumatic events, sexual functioning issues (low libido, orgasm difficulties, physical pain during sex, performance anxiety, ejaculation problems) and compulsive sexual behaviours.

I use a holistic approach which combines behavioural, interpersonal and mind-body therapies. I can help you to locate the underlying emotional and physical responses to a particular problem, working at a deep level with both mind and body in order to effect long-lasting change. I utilise my training in Inner Space Techniques - a form of meditative body-oriented therapy that helps to access these core emotional undercurrents within the body.

I am also able to help you process and regulate your emotions, understand negative patterns of behaviour, develop better communication strategies and increase body awareness. I am experienced in working with a range of client presentations, including depression, anxiety, grief, stress and anger.

As a relationship counsellor, I am able to support couples through all sorts of relationship issues, including infidelity, intimacy, arguments and communication problems.

I have experience working with complex trauma, especially in the area of sexuality. I am guided by the principles of trauma-informed counselling practice and work towards creating safety; self-paced learning; and consolidating your progress.

I start by creating a safe therapeutic space so that you feel physically and emotionally safe. My clinic room is located in a quiet inner courtyard sheltered from street noises and passing traffic. I facilitate bodily wellbeing with body-oriented methods to help you begin to feel safe in a bodily sense.

You have control over the therapeutic process and are in charge of the pace of your healing and progress. To help you feel more stable, I provide “here and now” grounding techniques to generate centred connection within. Working on the trauma, I will validate your responses to the particular traumatic events you have experienced, such as the flight, fight & freeze responses, or triggers and flashbacks. Together we will develop tools and techniques to orient back to the present moment.

By generating awareness of patterns of avoidant behaviour you can begin to address these, consolidate your strengths, develop self-care protocols, and build trust in yourself again.

Andrew Nolan

Social Worker
I am strongly motivated by a desire to enact social justice in my work. It is the driving reason for my nearly 20 years continuous work in the not-for-profit sector. I believe that everybody deserves to have their voice heard and respected. Trauma is the “elephant in the room” that so often prevents people’s full and active involvement in their community. Every person has intrinsic value. As a society we must address the root causes of interpersonal complex trauma and support the unfolding of people’s individual healing journey.
I have five years experience working at the Sexual Assault Support Service with adult and child survivors of sexual abuse and spent three years co-ordinating the service’s Royal Commission response. In addition I provided direct counselling support to people engaging with the Royal Commission and supported survivors to attend hearings.
I offer trauma informed counselling for individuals. Any approach or strategy is decided upon collaboratively with you. I view the counselling relationship as a team approach and I aim to be transparent about the process.
Telling your story is not essential to healing although for some it can be very powerful component. I will be present and available to support you in whichever area of your life you choose.
I offer a “three stage” model of counselling. The first stage focuses on creating safety, managing strong emotions and overwhelming feelings and reducing the impact of nightmares and flashbacks. This is about supporting you so that you can live free of the debilitating impacts of trauma. This stage may involve mindfulness training, trauma affect regulation, recognising triggers and CBT. I can also offer information about current research regarding how the brain and body respond to traumatic events. Understanding why we react to trauma in the way we do can be incredibly helpful.
The second stage is about processing the emotional response. During this stage I offer approaches such as art based expression, expressive therapies (expressing the mental thoughts and reactions) or direct emotional release processing of memories held in the body. These activities are framed with respect for the natural unfolding of your process and are conducted in a manner designed to increase your personal power.
The third stage is integration. The focus is on integrating the trauma into your life story, and giving meaning to it. It is about developing and strengthening your sense of self both personally and in relationship to others.
The decision to attend counselling is often a big step. Walking through the door to meet a new person takes courage. I offer a warm, non-judgemental space where you can simply be yourself.
