Professional Biography
I am qualified as an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker with over 20 years’ experience of delivering counselling services. I have worked as a counsellor in a number of Community Health and Youth Services before moving into Sexual Assault Support Services where I have been working for the past 10 years. Much of my work over the years has been in providing therapeutic support to victim/survivors of sexual abuse, childhood abuse, institutional abuse and family violence.
Central to my practice is a belief that all people possess the wisdom and internal resources they require to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives but that internal and external factors such as violence, abuse, stress, grief, mental health issues and adverse life events can at times make this difficult. I believe that psychotherapeutic counselling can offer significant assistance in managing these challenges but that this is most effective when appropriate time and care is taken to understand each person more fully and what holds most meaning in their lives.
My practice is trauma-informed and I am experienced in utilising a range of psychological interventions such as Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Mindfulness techniques, Solution Focussed Therapy to name a few.
In addition to counselling work, I have also worked alongside a range of community groups in violence prevention work and have facilitated multiple education and training sessions on working with survivors of sexual violence at universities, conferences, and workplaces in the health and social services sector.
I am thoughtful in my approach and welcome opportunities to work with people from a diverse range of experiences, gender expressions, sexualities and cultural backgrounds.
