Ms Susan Armstrong
Social Worker
I have been professionally trained Social Worker for 40 years operating within clinical practice and with special interests and experience in child welfare, working with children and adults who are survivors of childhood sexual abuse and perinatal mental health. I have worked in both UK and Australia directly with children and adults who were and are survivors of child residential care facilities. I have considerable experience in both group work and individual counseling of abuse survivors. After establishing and supporting a Child sexual Abuse Survivors group in rural South Gippsland, Victoria in 1992 I then, in 1995, established the DHS (Victoria) funded Child Sexual Abuse Counseling Service in Bass Coast Health. This service is still in operation. Since then I have worked with NGOs (Uniting Care Gippsland) and in private practice. I have completed a Master of Social Work (research) degree at Monash University with the specific topic of the perinatal mental health sequelae of childhood sexual abuse. I am comfortable and experienced in working with both men and women survivors. I also have considerable experience in the training and supervision of other workers and am happy to continue in this direction.

YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH ME:
Hey, I’m Suzanne. I know that finding the right therapist can be really hard, & often a gamble. Especially with something as sensitive as trauma. How do you know you are getting the right therapy for trauma? How do you know the therapist is any good? Or knows how to treat trauma? Or will be right for you? I hope to make all of that easier for you, by giving you a sense of who I am & the kind of experience you can expect if you see me.
When I meet with someone, my focus is on creating a space that’s safe & free from judgment. It’s important to me that you feel fully accepted. I want you to feel comfortable enough to share those deeply personal things that you might not have shared before & to feel that profound sense of being truly seen & heard.
THERAPY WITH ME:
I think trauma therapy should be gentle. I use Emotion Focused Therapy, which prioritises emotional & psychological safety. Therapy happens at your pace, you’re in control.
It's crucial that you don't get overwhelmed in therapy because feeling safe is essential to any effective healing. I don’t want you to ever associate therapy with trauma or -most importantly- get retraumatised. Effective therapy can only occur when your nervous system is regulated.
Most clients tell me that they find therapy ‘less scary’ than they anticipated. Despite revisiting what are sometimes the worst events of their lives, afterwards, they often describe feeling calm, sometimes vulnerable, but healed in a way that is difficult to put into words. That feeling is their brain rewiring.
MY INTEREST IN TRAUMA
Complex trauma is a huge interest of mine. I’ve had personal experiences that I’ve worked through with emotion focused therapy, so I know that healing is possible & how much my life has been transformed. I want to give that to others. I’ve done advanced training in Emotion Focused Therapy & Trauma & Dissociation & I continue to train in both.
MY CLINIC & OTHER PRACTICALITIES:
I offer sessions in my clinic & via Zoom. My clinic is my pride & joy & I’ve spent hours creating a homely, relaxing, & safe atmosphere. It features two rooms: my own & a child therapy room, which is used alternately by two child therapists who share the space with me.
Medicare rebates are available. My fee is $220.00, & the Medicare rebate is $136.35, which means your out-of-pocket cost per session will be $83.65. If you use the 10 Medicare sessions & $220 is too much, please don't hesitate to ask about a fee reduction.

Ms Suzanne Ray
Psychologist
My learning has occurred over many years of personal and professional development. My life has taken me across many rural locations and a period of time in the city. Needless to say, I have a great connection with nature and therefore have spent the majority of my life in rural locations and value spending time in nature. I value being engaged in both solitary and group activities on a regular basis.
I work with a client centred focus, recognising that each person has their own unique experience and that I have resources that can support people in their quest to improve their wellbeing. I appreciate that each person has their own time frame for moving forward and that hurrying this process is counterproductive. However, I do believe that each person is capable of living a meaningful life no matter what their experience and that the ease for movement waxes and wanes as we encounter challenges. I use various modalities such as CBT, ACT, DBT, EMDR and hypnosis. Sometimes therapy is about talking about and listening to their experience, sometimes it is about strengthening skills to manage unwanted emotions, intrusions, and sensations in more helpful ways.
I am guided by clients' goals for therapy and work to support clients make choices that support themselves in more effective ways.
