Mrs Mioi Forster-Nakayama
Counsellor
I am a counsellor/ somatic movement psychotherapist with more than 10 years of clinical experience of supporting children, adolescents and adults. I am a clinical registrant of the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) and supervise other counsellors in clinical practice.
I am passionate, empathetic and committed to supporting trauma survivors/thrivers to discover their inner strengths and foster self-growth and resilience. I believe it is important for them to make their own choices and respect their decisions in a therapeutic process. I provide a non-judgmental and safe space and work through challenges together. The trusting therapeutic relationship is key to bringing a shift and change in the clients’ lives. I focus on supporting them to understand their emotions and relationships with significant others.
Somatic Approach
As trauma often gets stored in the body, moving, and understanding the body is part of a pathway to process trauma when you are ready. While experiencing anxiety, overwhelming big emotions or/and a numbness of the body, noticing and acknowledging where they are located in your body is the first step. In a safe, confidential and nonjudgmental space, I guide you to breathe (only when you feel safe), move as your body wants, and find movements together to process what you need. It is often important to switch off the busy brain and get connected with the body. You require no movement experience.
Somatic Body Mapping (https://www.movingcircle.au/somaticbodymapping) is another process that I offer clients to process trauma. You are invited to explore movements and body sensations that may be connected to your trauma, memories or past experiences. You are invited to transfer the bodily experience onto a body-sized paper by using art materials. This process requires no somatic and artistic skills and experiences. I occasionally offer an intensive or for individual clients, I offer this space regularly.
Clinical Experience
I clinically worked in psychiatric hospitals, primary schools, special needs schools, a pupil referral unit, a prison, NHS mental health hospitals and charities in the United Kingdom and Japan. I also worked with women with postnatal depression and anxiety who creatively explored movement and connected with the other women with similar symptoms.
In Adelaide, I am working at a clinic with NDIS participants, mainly children above 5 who are diagnosed with ASD (including Pathological Demand Avoidance), ADHD, trauma, global developmental delay, Down Syndrome and other disabilities. In my private practice, I work with women and children who are suffering from trauma including preverbal trauma, anxiety and depression.
I abide by the Code of Conduct and Ethical Practice set by the PACFA and DTAA. MA in Dance Movement Psychotherapy. Accredited clinical supervisor. Advanced Supervision Course.
