Professional Biography

I help you find your way through the maze of living by collaboratively addressing the issues and questions that really matter to you.
25 years of experience in the field have taught me that people, circumstances, the quality of a given relationship and a particular situation vary a great deal, and that each therapeutic couple is unique. No one approach or technique works for everybody or at all times. Feeling heard and seen is vitally important and the development of trust and understanding are essential.

My long-standing interest in complex trauma resulted from repeatedly coming across the devastating effects caused by childhood trauma in people who present with a range of seemingly unrelated issues. Depression, grief, substance abuse, relationship difficulties, anxiety, eating and personality disorders can represent long-term legacies of trauma histories - as evidenced by the much cited A (dverse) C (hildhood) E (xperience) study.
I have a particular interest in Attachment Theory as a way to understand a range of mental health symptoms, and as a foundational system of human relationships, which gets severely disrupted as a result of childhood abuse. I keep up-to-date with developments in the trauma field by regularly attending professional development events and reading current professional literature. I have been registered in the Blue Knot Foundations' practitioner directory for the last 10 years.

My work in private practice has been in London and Sydney over a period of 20 years. I have also been employed in a variety of government, non-government, tertiary education, and private settings in England and Australia. Apart from my interest in childhood trauma I have worked in grief and loss services within the Health Department, where I have also been providing regular education and training to health service staff and medical students.

I have 25 years of professional practice experience as a Counselling Psychologist and Psychotherapist and have been a long-standing member of the Australian and British Psychological Societies, as well as the UK Council for Psychotherapy. I completed my undergraduate psychology studies in Berlin, and postgraduate Masters in Counselling and Psychotherapy in London. In 1996 I moved to Sydney with my family where I have since lived and worked.
