Professional Biography
My name is Judy and I am a deeply passionate trauma & abuse counsellor since 2018. I have worked with adults, children and young people with extensive experience in working with all mental health issues, particularly crisis, family/domestic violence and sexual harm in New Zealand and Australia. My passion in this sector is to journey with people in the darkest, most difficult moments of life and be a witness to their post-traumatic growth. I provide clients with tools, coping strategies, a place to contain but also process the trauma.
You can expect a gentle, caring, warm approach where you will be heard, understood and validated but also empowered, equipped with tools to deal with and manage day-to-day stressors. I work holistically with your well-being at the forefront of my focus. My eclectic background from a vast range of trainings & modalities means I am adaptable to the client’s needs session by session.
My work is primarily via Telehealth as this means I can reach more all over Australia. I am based in Brisbane, QLD and face-to-face can be arranged if needed for clients based in Brisbane. I believe in wrap around support for client and will do my best to find referral network on a needs basis.
My sessions are greatly dependent on the client’s needs and goals for therapy. Sessions are 60 minutes long via Google Meets; on the same day & time every week. We will talk about house-keeping in our first session. Complex Trauma work is long-term, therefore, expect at least 12 sessions to begin.
Overwhelm is a nervous system response and very normal. I use my deep attunement with the client to ground, contain and regulate the client. We will work together to figure out your window of tolerance and stay within it to avoid re-traumatisation.
Being trauma-informed in my practice means being deeply attuned to you and getting to know the person in front of me. You are not defined by what happened to you; instead, your values and what’s important to you. As a strength-based counsellor, I come from the perspective of focusing on your internal strengths and resourcefulness which includes showing up for therapy. My ultimate desire is for the traumatic incidence(s) to become integrated into long-term memory and for it to be an event that happened and stops impacting your now and future. I provide a safe environment and always checks in with the client. In our therapeutic relationship, you will be supported to share as much or as little, as you feel comfortable.
I love counselling, I love helping people get their light bulb moment. I’m good at trauma space and I love the clients that I see.
I attend a lot of PDs and have internal and external supervision regularly which keeps my work safe and ethical but also validate and improve my client work. I invite feedback and evaluations at the end of my sessions and do weekly check-ins with clients to make sure we are keeping on track to their goals and what they want out of therapy.
