Professional Biography
D.Psych (Clin Psych), M. Psych (Child Clin. Psych), B. Litt (Hons), FAPS
I am a clinical psychologist with more than twenty years experience. Initially in Child and Mental Health services, later in private practice and The Children's Court, I have seen many children, and adults who suffered trauma. This includes sexual abuse, domestic violence, and emotional abuse or neglect. In private practice I have worked with individuals who suffered from post traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, and other forms of disturbance, often due to trauma in their past or present lives. I have had ongoing training, through formal learning, personal supervision, peer consultation, and attendance at conferences. Professional Development is a requisite of maintaining membership of the Clinical College of the APS.
I use a psychodynamic framework, incorporating aspects of cognitive behavioural and schema therapy, at times, and considering the needs of each individual client. This includes considering how they progress, and discussing their needs with them. Though client's may have had similar experiences, their individuality needs to be recognised, and respected. Accompanying people through this journey is a fulfilling experience in which I also grow as a professional and as a person.
Issues of trust are integral to allowing the therapy to occur. Working through sometimes overwhelming feelings anger, guilt, and grief allows the process of healing to begin. Helping people come to greater understanding of present difficulties in living, and how these have been shaped by the past, can allow people to better manage, and live more fulfilled lives. Helping people move to a sense of hope and acceptance is extremely meaningful work. This process can require time, involving collaboration between client and therapist. A containing environment providing a sense of continuity, safety and respect needs to be provided.
I work in a clinic with other mental health professionals, usually a few clinicians are present at any one time. The environment is comfortable and quiet. There is an alternate waiting area and private access is possible. In the room, clients can use the therapy space as they need. Referrals can be made to other professionals or community agencies. Appointments are usually weekly, the frequency of sessions is agreed upon after the initial consultations. Appointments are available during working hours, with some after hour appointments. I am able to speak with people regarding their inquiries by phone, before they make an appointment. I look forward to engaging with clients in this important work.
